Burdge Freeman Green II, M.D. age 89 of Houston, Texas died January 31, 2013 in Cookson, OK. He was born on November 13, 1923 in Guelph, Ontario Canada to the Rev. Burdge Freeman and Annie Georgina “Evelyn” (Wicks) Green. Burdge’s father was a minister of the United Church of Canada. Burdge married Jacqueline Harriett Burr in Bothwell, Ontario on December 27th 1944.
He obtained a Medical Degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1947. After interning at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario, they moved to Prairie Grove, Arkansas in 1948. There he received surgical training under the preceptorship of Dr. Frank Riggall, M.D. FRCS. In 1950 they moved to Stilwell, Oklahoma where he maintained a medical and surgical practice for 50 years.
He became a US citizen in 1956. Burdge was active in many community affairs and was particularly pleased to have served on the City Utility Board for 33 years.
He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. He became a private pilot and enjoyed flying for 40 years.
Burdge served as Adair County Coroner and Medical Examiner for many years.
Governor Henry Bellmon appointed him to the State Board of Health where he served for nine years. He was active in county, state and national medical associations.
Burdge and “Jackie” raised 6 children and were blessed with 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Jackie died in March 1989. Burdge later met Dorothy Smith Ferguson and they were married on January 25, 1992 at St. Martins Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas. Their principal place of residence was in Houston and they spent the summers on Lake Tenkiller in Oklahoma.
Burdge was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie in 1989; his son Burdge Freeman Green III in 2006; and his daughter Calene Green Cameron in 2008.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy, of 21 years, his brother Charles Gordon Green of Canada and his sister, Ruth Green Apland, of Mexico and also these children, grandchildren, step children and step grandchildren: Barbara and Scott Bollenbach of Kingfisher, OK, Beverly and Mike Ellis of Oklahoma City, Kathy Elder of Oklahoma City, and Marion and Tony Morrison of McKinney, Texas.
Grandchildren include: Hunter and Staci Cameron, Austin and Casey Cameron, Cash and Ashley Cameron, Laura and Rob Moore, Angela and Stephen Swienton, Austin and Stephanie Bollenbach, Christy Counts, Kimberly and Evan Anderson, Dr. Burdge Freeman Green IV and his wife Lisa, Easton Elder, Evan Elder, Jacqueline and Peter Wirth, Devan DeCell and Cameron DeCell. Great Grandchildren include: Thomas, Alex, Gardner, Scarlett, Ashlyn, Andrew, Vivien, Archer, Elin and Carter.
Burdge also shared two step children and several grandchildren with Dorothy: Karen Ferguson Embs and her children Kendall and David of San Antonio, TX, and Hershall C. Ferguson III and his wife Molly of Houston and their children Hunt, Ren and Magee.
The thoughts of Will Rogers describe Burdge best: “A stranger is a friend that Burdge just met.”
He would tell everyone “I’m all prayed up and ready to go. I’ve lived a very blessed and wonderful long life!”
Memorial services held at 1:30 pm on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at First United Methodist Church, Stilwell, Ok with Pastor Barry Hayes officiating. Inurnment at 11 am on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Stilwell City Cemetery.
