George Chair was born July 8, 1935 to Rabbit Chair and Gaynie (Sixkiller) Chair in Stilwell, OK. He departed this life on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 in Tulsa, OK.
George attended North Greasy Elementary School and later in life obtained his GED. George served in the Army a short time as a Private 1st Class until his Honorable Discharge. He worked at many different jobs, but the job he retired from was for the Bureau of Indian Affairs Roads Division. He ran a grader for 12 years and was a Survey Assistant for 12 years. After retiring, he worked as a grader operator for Adair County District #1 and since then has worked as a foster grandparent for Maryetta Public Schools, where he was a Grandpa to many children.
George was active in the Republican Party where he met many friends. He served on the State Finance Committee and during his years had the honor of receiving an invitation to the Presidential Inauguration and the Governor’s Inauguration, which was a highlight in his life.
But, the greatest event of his life was on July 27, 1980, when he gave his life to the Lord. George was a member of the Chuculate Baptist Church for 26 years. He surrendered to preach on October 7, 1989. He was a licensed minister and preached at many churches in our area. In 2009, George joined the First Baptist Church in Stilwell. George did not marry, but had a special niece, Gaynia Jones, that he said was as close as a daughter. He spent much time with Gaynia and her family and left them many wonderful memories. George also spent alot of time with another niece and nephew who helped care for him, Lisa Fields, who he called “Rock” and Perry Chair, who we call “Pete”. George loved all of his family and especially loved to get together or have “parties”, as he called them. One of his greatest enjoyments was spending time with family and friends talking about the past, telling stories and singing his tunes.
George was preceded in death by his parents: Rabbit and Gaynie Chair, brothers: J.E. Chair, J.B. Chair and Perry Chair, Sr. and sister: Frances Jean Chair.
George is survived by many family members, his sisters: Margaret Christie, Genevieve Holt, both of Stilwell, Katy Vardeman and husband Jack of Bartlesville, OK, sister in law: Jean Chair of Stilwell, brother: R.W. Chair, Jr. and wife Margaret of Baton Rouge, LA. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Roberts/Reed-Culver Chapel with Bro. Randy Proctor and Bro. Roger Haney officiating. Interment followed at Chuculate Cemetery under the direction of Roberts/Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
