John E. Hummingbird was born May 30, 1934, in Stilwell, Oklahoma to Isaac and Ella Mae (Chuculate) Hummingbird. He went home to be with the Lord on December 3, 2008, in Wagoner, Oklahoma at the age of 74 years, six months and three days.
John was a graduate of Stilwell High School and attended Oklahoma Baptist University. On December 4, 1964, he married Linda Casteel in Stilwell, Oklahoma. She faithfully followed and supported him in his church work and as a pastor’s wife. Her love and continued devotion was his constant anchor. He served in the Oklahoma Army National Guard, 45th Infantry Brigade, Stilwell Unit for 11 years. He owned and operated John’s Fine Barbering in Stilwell for 33 years.
After receiving the call to preach the gospel, he accepted his first pastorate at Chuculate Baptist Church. For 33 years he pastored and ministered in many churches in the surrounding area. John recently returned to Chuculate Baptist Church as a member.
His family was most important to him. He especially loved watching his grandchildren in school and church activities and all their sporint events.
John enjoyed hunting wolves and foxes, golfing, fishing, yard work, visiting at the local coffee shop and attending church functions.
Those preceding John in death were his parents, brothers, Isaac, Jess, Ryder and Jimmy Dale Hummingbird, one infant brother, sisters, Genora Grigsby, Marie McNac, JoAnn Hawkins, Louise Hart and one infant sister.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Linda, of the home; three children, Darron and Toby Hummingbird, of Coweta, OK, Kim Hummingbird and Joe Vardemen, of Stilwell, Teresa and Brad Self, of Westville; one brother-in-law, Dean Grigsby, of Stilwell; three sisters-in-law, Betty Hummingbird and Faye Hummingbird, of Stilwell, Linda Hummingbird Cox, of Sallisaw, OK; seven grandchildren, Heather Catron, Cody Young, Dakota Hummingbird, Justin Self, Montana Hummingbird, JoeAlex Vardemen and Arizona Hummingbird, several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2008, at First Baptist Church with Gil Hooper, Kevin Flynn, Charles Hummingbird and Darron Hummingbird officiating.
 
Interment will follow at Chalk Bluff Cemetery under the direction of Hart Funeral Home.
