MONA JEAN HARPER

June 14, 1934 - December 30, 2017

Mona Jean Harper, 83 year old Mutual resident, died Saturday, December 30, 2017 in the Elkwood Memory Care Assisted Living Center in Elk City, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2018 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jason Dirks officiating. Burial will follow in the Moscow Flats Cemetery.

Mona Jean (Mathews) Harper was born June 14, 1934 in Shattuck, Oklahoma to Cecil Charles and Thora Ferne (Wingo) Mathews. Mona Jean grew up on the family farm southwest of Mutual and attended Sibel Country School and then went on and graduated from Mutual High School in 1951. She was united in marriage to Bill Harper on June 14, 1953 in the Mutual Methodist Church and they were the first marriage in the new church. To this union one son, Bill J. was born in 1958. They lived on Moscow Flats where they farmed, ranched and owned Harper Trucking. She enjoyed cooking for all of the hired hands as she treated each one like they were her own.

Mona Jean was a member of the Moscow Flats Church and the Mutual Methodist Church. She was very involved in the church and served on the pastor parish committee. Mona Jean also served on the Woodward Elks Rodeo Queen Committee. She was a member of the American Paint Horse Association and the American Quarter Horse Association. With the help of their son, Bill and Mona raised and trained many show and rodeo horses. In 1973 they won the Cutting at the Paint Horse World Show. Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Bill Harper of the home; one son, Bill J. Harper and wife Laura of Mutual; two grandchildren, Jenna Harper Cooper and husband Jim of Stephenville, Texas, Jase Harper of Mutual; one great-grandchild, Cade Cooper; one sister, Dona June Mathews of Mutual; one brother-in-law, Jack Harper and wife Linda of Mooreland; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother J.D. Mathews and brother-in-law, Jim Harper.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Alzheimer’s Research with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
