Woodward, Okla. — Helen Rommel, 98 year old resident of Mooreland, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011, in Mooreland. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2011, in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel in Woodward with the Reverend Ray Blakley officiating. Burial will be in the Mooreland Cemetery under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. Visitation for Helen will be held in Woodward.

Helen Flo (Sutherland) Rommel was born on July 22, 1912 to Charles and Ellen (Nordgren) Sutherland on her father’s homestead near Chester, Oklahoma in Major County. They moved to Garber in 1916 by covered wagon. Her brothers, Howard, Herb and John drove their cattle by horseback and at nights they would camp along the road. In 1924, they moved back to Sherman, Oklahoma in Major County. On August 15, 1937, Helen was married to Fred Rommel at Waynoka. They moved to California where they lived for five years and in 1942, they moved back to Major County where they farmed and ranched. In 1960, they moved to Mooreland where she worked as a telephone operator for several years.

Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mooreland, where she attended faithfully until her health prevented her from doing so. She was also a member of the Home Extension Club for 40 years where she won many blue ribbons for her sewing and canning, was a member of the Mooreland Senior Center and also belonged to the Mooreland Rebekah Lodge #160 for over 30 years. Her hobbies were sewing and crocheting.

Preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers, Howard, Harold and Albert; two half-brothers, John and Herb; two half-sisters, Winnie Harmon and Ruby Smith; one sister-in-law, Laura Rommel ; several nieces and nephews and her beloved cat, Coley.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to the Mooreland United Methodist Church, Building Fund with the funeral home accepting the memorials.
