Woodward, Okla. — Marvin "Sparky" Gantz, 91 year old Mooreland resident, passed from this life on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 in the Mooreland Heritage Manor. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2008 in the Mooreland Cemetery with Pastor Tom Marcum of the Mooreland First Christian Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Marvin Leroy Gantz was born on July 16, 1916 on the family farm in Curtis, Oklahoma to Ella Marie (Kenny) and Edward "Lewis" Gantz. Sparky was raised in the Curtis-Quinlan area and attended school at Curtis. At a young age Sparky quit school to take care of his mother. He went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad and then went to work for City Services before enlisting in the United States Army. Sparky served during World War II in Africa and in France as a member of the horse drawn artillery. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. After his honorable discharge he was united in marriage to Verda Irene Miller on July 27, 1946 in Sayre, Oklahoma. They made their home in Mooreland where they have lived since that time. They were blessed with two children, Chris and Cheryl. Sparky managed the C.E. Sharp Lumber Company for 26 years and then went to work for the Mooreland Coop, working there until he retired at the age of 70. Sparky was a member of the Mooreland First Christian Church where he was a board member until his health failed. He loved his church and church family and was instrumental in the planning stages of the new church building. Sparky loved softball, baseball, bowling, golf and fishing. He coached summer league boys and girls softball and baseball for years and enjoyed being with kids. Sparky‚s greatest loves were his family, friends, and God. He always had time to help out a friend in need.

He is survived by his loving wife Verda of the home; one son Chris Gantz and wife Cindy of Mooreland; his daughter Cheryl Baxter of Woodward; two granddaughters, Chawn Hensley and husband Jason of Mooreland; Brandy Hastings and husband Steve of Dixon, California; two great grandchildren, Jessica and Riley Hensley of Mooreland; one sister Edith Teeter of Chandler and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Francis, his brother Lewis "Doc" Gantz and one sister Florence Harper.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mooreland First Christian Church Building Fund with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
