Lena Buckley Herbel of Woodward passed away at age 89 on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, in Woodward. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at the New Covenant Church with Rev. Ed Dowty officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

Lena Belle (Mahl) Buckley Herbel was born Aug. 25, 1929, in Elk City, Okla., to Michael and Henrietta Etta Wenthold Mahl, and she grew up in Canute, Okla. She graduated from Canute High School in 1947. She married Don Wayne Buckley on Dec. 28, 1948, in Canute, and the couple lived there and later in Sapulpa before settling in Woodward in 1966. They had four children, Charlene, David, Diane and Steve.

Following her husbands death in 1993, she later married Eugene (Gene) Herbel on Nov. 12, 2011, in Woodward. The couple honeymooned in New Zealand and loved spending time together and with their families, including his daughter from a previous marriage, Vicki Hanson, and her husband, Fred from Colorado.

Mrs. Buckley Herbel worked as a waitress for much of her life, including stints at Polly Anna Cafe, Sands Restaurant, the Rib Ranch and Roscoes. She was also a longtime member of New Covenant Church. Feisty, funny and caring, she insisted on mowing her own lawn until she was 79. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing rook and dominoes. She also took great pride in caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family was her joy.

She is survived by her husband and her four children; Charlene Duerr and her husband, Larry; David Buckley and his wife, Anne; Diane Neher and her husband, John; and Steve Buckley. She is also survived by her brother, Herbert Mahl, and his wife, Elaine; four nephews and six nieces.

She is also survived by nine grandchildren, including Angie Buckley, Kristy Gammill and her husband, Bryan; Shannon Lillard and her husband, Clint; T.J. Duerr; David Neher and his wife, Marisa; Jeni Duerr; Ashton Landry and her husband, Dustin; Sarah Buckley and Kate Buckley. She is survived by 11 great-grandchildren, Morgan, Anna, Sydney, Caleb, Colton, Macey, Seth, Baylee, Liam, Peggy Joe, and Madden.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, her parents and two sisters, Janice Hunnicutt and JoAnn Mock.

Memorial contributions may be sent to New Covenant Church or Billings Funeral Home.
