Woodward, Okla. — Ben H. "Doc" Benson DDS, 78 year old long time Woodward Dentist, died Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 20, 2010 at the First Christian Church in Woodward with the Reverend Gene Spillman officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Bennie Harris Benson was born February 9, 1932 in Cherokee, Oklahoma to Raymond Royal and Vesta Mae (Niles). Ben was reared in Cherokee and graduated from Cherokee High School in 1950. He attended Northwestern State College and received his Bachelors Degree in 1954. Ben was united in marriage to Nita M. Bishop on August 25, 1953 in Freedom, Oklahoma. They were blessed with two boys, Bradley Niles and Brock Cameron. Nita and Ben made their home in Alva until Ben went to the Kansas City Dental School. After his graduation in 1958 they moved to Woodward where Ben formed a partnership with Dr. John Carmichael. Ben served the community of Woodward as a Dentist for 52 years, retiring on June 30, 2010.

He was a member of the First Christian Church. Ben was a member of the Woodward Masonic Lodge #189 and a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Guthrie. Ben was President of the Oklahoma Dental Association from 1970-1971. He was also a National Delegate to the American Dental Association and was a member of the International College of Dentist. Ben enjoyed his morning coffee group and he loved spending time with his family, especially his six grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Nita Benson of the home; two sons, Brad Benson and wife Liz of Norman, Brock Benson and wife Khristina of Fargo; six grandchildren, Blythe Benson, Josh Benson, Whitney Benson, Alyssa Benson, Levi Benson and Jordan Benson; sister-in-law, Donna Benson; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Don.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Western Plains Youth Shelter in Woodward with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
