Funeral services for John Arthur Hanan will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2020, at the Elm and Murrow Church of Christ in Waynoka with Scott Kysar and Chris Olson officiating. Interment will be in the Waynoka Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Waynoka, LLC.

John Arthur Hanan, son of the late Harry J. and Margaret E. (Barker) Hanan, was born July 25, 1943, in Alva, Oklahoma, and passed away after a lengthy illness on August 5, 2020, at his home near Waynoka at the age of 77 years and 8 days.

John graduated from Waynoka High School. He then attended Northwestern State College where he received his Bachelors of Science degree in 1965, and his Masters of Science degree in 1974. On June 5, 1965, he was united in marriage to Melva Jean Crawford in Okeene, Oklahoma. He taught school in Caldwell and Sharon, both in Kansas, and Higgins, Texas. After he retired from teaching in 1992, he returned to Waynoka where he engaged in farming.

He was a member of the Elm and Murrow Church of Christ where he served as an elder for several years. He enjoyed working on his Farmall International tractors, hunting and fishing, and loved his Labrador retrievers. The St. Louis Cardinals was his favorite sports team.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Perry Hanan and Samuel Hanan.

John is survived by his wife, Melva Jean of the home; two daughters, Jenean Billins and husband Melvin of Oklahoma City and Janice Hayes and husband Rick of Waynoka; and two grandchildren, Reese Hayes and Rainey Hayes, both of Waynoka; other relatives and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Waynoka Firefighters or the Wounded Warrior Project.
