Waynoka Cemetery


Alva – the funeral for Darrel Francis Byrd, 85, will be 2 PM Sunday at Green Valley Free Methodist church. The Rev. Dave Keller and Edsel Hall will officiate. Burial will follow in Waynoka Cemetery. Arrangements are by Wharton Funeral Chapel.

He was born April 17, 1916, southwest of Alva to Sarah Frances Hale and Estal A. Byrd and died Thursday, January 17, 2002, at his home.

He attended Lone Star No. 73 rural grade school, graduating in 1930. In the fall of 1930 he attended Northwestern high school, Alva, graduating in 1934. He was active in vo-ag during high school. His highlight was a second-place individual and a member of the first place team at the state poultry show. He was awarded the Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree by the Dacoma FFA. Following high school, he worked with the local 4H club as boys coach, and boys coach for the Woods County 4H club, going with members to state contests at Stillwater and the American Royal at Kansas City. He farmed with his dad and worked for various neighbors. He attended Northwestern State College, Alva, graduating in May 1942.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps Chemical Warfare Service, stationed at Will Rogers Field, Oklahoma City, and Hunter Field, Savannah Georgia. He arrived at Shipdham England, an 8th Air Force B – 24 base, April 1943. He was stationed there until June 1945. He received an honorable discharge on October 13, 1945.

He married Ethel Crusinberry September 1, 1945. They moved to his cutting and baling hay after buying a baler in 1952. He continued his work until he became ill. He was a member of Green Valley Free Methodist Church, serving on the trustees board and the Oklahoma Camp Association where he was on the finance committee for several years. He was a member of Woods County Farm Bureau and in 1983 he was honored for being a 30 – year member. He also served on the County Farmers Home Administration Board.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Trzebiatowski of Carmen; two sons, James of the home and Kenneth of Carmen; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Green Valley Free United Methodist Church, Dacoma Volunteer Fire Department or the organization of donor's choice.
