Alva woman dies in accident

An Alva woman was killed in an automobile accident 1.4 miles east of Oklahoma 8 on Oklahoma 45 in Alfalfa County Wednesday, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed Thursday.

Ruth A.Vanlandingham, 56, was dead on arrival at Fairview Hospital.

According to a report filed with the OHP's Troop J, The accident occurred at 4:25 PM Wednesday. Investigators said Vanlandingham was traveling east on Oklahoma 45 when she ran off the north side of the roadway and hit a culvert, then rolled once.

Investigators said Vanlandingham's seatbelt was not in use at the time of the wreck, although her car's airbag did deploy. - - - - - Alva – Mass of Resurrection for Ruth Ann Vanlandingham, who died Wednesday from injuries in an automobile accident west of Helena, will be said at 2 PM Saturday at Alva Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. David Imming will officiate. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery under direction of Wharton Funeral Chapel.

She was born July 30, 1935, in Enid to Jim and Lorene Carlton Devery and started school in Enid. In 1944, she moved with the family to Alva and attended Longfellow Grade School, then graduated from Alva High School in 1953. She attended Monicello School for Girls at Alton, Illinois, and the University of Oklahoma. She was a flight attendant for American Airlines out of Dallas, Texas. On September 23, 1958, she married Ted Vanlandingham at Alva Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They lived in Dallas. In 1961, they moved to Alva where she attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University, earning a bachelor of arts degree in 1980. She worked as a counselor for Achenbach Center at Hardtner, Kansas, until it closed. She then worked part – time for Macksville Center in Macksville, Kansas, until 1990. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alva, Monica Circle, was a lay Eucharist minister for shut – ins, coordinator of Parish Senior Outreach Program, and member of Altar Society, Chapter C of PEO and the Cherokee Strip Outlet Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution (DAR).

Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Susan of the home; two sons, Mark of Oklahoma City and Mike of Alva; her mother, Lorene Devery of Alva; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father.
