Leonard R. Nelson
June 10, 1918 ~ Sept. 27, 2006

A graveside service for Leonard R. Nelson, 88, of Alva, will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Mark Bershe will officiate. Arrangements are by Wharton Funeral Chapel, Alva.

He was born June 10, 1918, near Cherokee, OK. to Francis Susan Garrett and William George Nelson and died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, in Enid.

He attended school in Lambert and graduated from Cherokee High School in 1936. He worked for Conoco Service Station in Cherokee and later was manager.

He married Helena Schick March 23, 1940, in Alva. They made their home in Cherokee. They farmed north of Dacoma. They returned to the Nelson family farm one mile west of Cherokee in 1959. In 1986 they moved to Alva. He was a member of Alva Zion Lutheran Church, serving as an usher and an elder and on several boards.

Surviving are his wife, Helena of the home; three daughters, Judy Nusser of Alva, and Linda Tuxhorn and Nancy Burgess, both of Hutchinson, Kan.; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and one great-grandson.

Memorials may be made to Diabetes Foundation or the church.
