Freedom Cemetery


The funeral for Gene Province, 73, of Freedom, will be 2 p.m. Monday at Freedom school auditorium. The Rev. Aaron Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Freedom Cemetery. Arrangements are by Wharton Funeral Chapel, Alva.

He was born Sept. 18, 1934, in Alva to Jesse Martin and Mildred J. Tharp Province and died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at his home.

He attended Red Hill School and graduated from Freedom High School in 1952. After graduation he moved to Wichita, Kan., and worked at Boeing Aircraft Co. He joined the Army in November 1953 and spent one year in Germany. After serving two years, he went back to Boeing Aircraft Co., where he worked for 38 years. He married Coleta “Co” Darr May 10, 1958, in Miami, Okla. They made their home in Wichita, Haysville, Kan., and Freedom. He coached summer league baseball for nine years. His Babe Ruth team was undefeated for three straight years.

Surviving are his wife, Co; one daughter, Denise Fox; two sons, Lance of Haysville and Lyndon of Freedom; one brother, Tom Province of Henderson, Nev.; one half brother, Marty Province of Woodward; two sisters, Leatrice Taylor of McKinzie, Tenn., and Pauline Archer of Kingston; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to Share Medical Center Hospice or Freedom ambulance.
