Wichita, Kansas – James Childers, a wealthy ranchman of Faulkner, Oklahoma, was shot and killed near his ranch by Albert Russell, a farmer who has surrendered and says he shot in self – defense. The men quarreled over the rumor that Childers said Russell was too friendly with Mrs. Childers. Russell was a "Rough Rider" with Colonel Roosevelt at San Juan Hill.

Charged with being Accessory with Russell to the killing of Childers, James Smith, who is said to be the man who was an eyewitness to the killing of James Childers by A. P. Russell, the man now in jail, was arrested this morning and is now in jail, charged with being an accessory to the crime of murdering Childers. County Attorney McCrory and his assistant, W. M. Bickel, with Hugh Martin, the sheriff, have returned from holding the inquest, and brought with them the man Smith. It is said that he is the man who incited Russell to do the shooting, and under the Oklahoma statutes would be equally guilty. It is charged that he is the man who carried to Russell the stories that aroused the latter to the commission of the crime, and urged him to do the shooting. The officers claim to have in their possession the evidence that justifies them in making this accusation, and a vigorous prosecution will take place. There will be less sympathy for the man who was the cause of inciting the enmity which caused the death of Childers then there will be for Russell, who was protecting the honor of his family. There is a rumor on the streets and about the courthouse, that Russell was in an insane asylum in Georgia, and that he was discharged from the Army on account of a sun stroke which took place while he was in the south. These rumors will be investigated by the proper officers and given to our readers.
