Death's Call

Judge Wilhite Called to the Great Beyond. The City Mourns the Loss of an Honored and Respected Official

From the courier.

Last Saturday afternoon at 5:20, at his home in this city, there passed to the Great Beyond an honored official and highly respected and beloved citizen and as earnest a Christian gentleman as God ever made. After a brief illness of only a few weeks from rheumatism Police Judge Daniel C. Wilhite bade farewell to those around him, and his spirit took its flight Him who gave it life, leaving hundreds of friends and relatives to grieve over his departure.

The funeral services will be held at the Christian Church Thursday afternoon, Rev. Newby, pastor of the church, officiating.

The life of Judge Wilhite was a noble one. At an early age he embraced the Christian religion and United with the Church of Christ, of which he has ever since been a devout member and an earnest worker. He was born in Saline County, Missouri, November 9, 1845, making him 61 years and eight months old. He was a carpenter by trade, and most of his life had been spent at this occupation. He came to Alva in 1900 and has lived in the city ever since; has twice been elected to the office of Police Judge, and has made as faithful an officer as was ever connected with the city government.

Comrade Wilhite served three years and three months in the Union army, first a member of Company F, Seventh Missouri Volunteers, and afterward transferred to Company B. He was a member of the Alva G. A. R. Post.

"One by one fall leaves of autumn Till the ground they thickly strew; One by one, like leaves of autumn, Fall the wearers of the blue."

In 1865 Judge Wilhite was married to Miss Mary F. Maupin, in Saline County, Missouri, and side-by-side they have traveled the rugged road of life until the soul of Judge Wilhite took its flight to the better land last Saturday afternoon. To this union seven children were born: Mrs. W. F. Hatfield, of this city, P. E. Wilhite, of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Ollie Breeden, of Alva; Mrs. Lilla Donnan, of Kansas City, Kansas; H. R. Wilhite and L. A. Wilhite of this city, and Mrs. Bertha Hoffman of Wellington, Kansas; all of whom, except P. E. Wilhite, of California, are with their beloved mother sharing the sad bereavement over the irreparable loss. He also leaves three brothers and five sisters to mourn.
