Alva Cemetery


Alva - Graveside services for Jewel D. Smith, 80, were at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Alva Municipal Cemetery.  The Rev. Ronald Olson of Cedar Grove Wesleyan Church officiated.  Arrangements were by Wharton Funeral Chapel.  She died Aug. 7, 1995, in Wichita, Kan.

She was born Dec. 28, 1914, in Covington to George Earl and Sallie Calile Holding Richey.  The family came to Alva where she attended Alva schools, graduating from Horace Mann High School.  She attended Northwestern State Teachers College.

She married Forrest W. Smith on Sept. 16, 1934, in Alva.  They lived in Alva until 1946 when they moved to Cherokee where she was involved in two family businesses, Home Dairy and Cherokee Ceramics.  She taught others to design and fire ceramics.  In 1970, they purchased Cherokee Mills.  In 1981, they retired and moved to Red River, N.M.  He died March11, 1986.

She was a member of Alva Wesleyan Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy Nelson of Manhattan, Kan.; two sons, Lee of Wichita, Kan., and Robert of Norman; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; three sisters, Georgia Peterson of Ellensburg, Wash., Joan Hager of Guymon and Iva Jane Robertson of Choctaw.

She was preceded in death by a daughter and a brother.

Contributions may be made in her memory to Alva Wesleyan Women International.
