Alva Cemetery


Bartlesville – The funeral for Alice Schnitzer, 80, will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday at the Wharton Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Wendell Patterson officiating. Burial will be in the Alva Municipal Cemetery.

She died Sunday evening in a Bartlesville hospital.

Born near Manchester in the Oklahoma Territory on June 11, 1886, she moved with her parents to Harper County. She attended the Buffalo schools and Northwestern State Normal College. She did graduate work at Northwestern Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma State University.

She taught in Harper and Woods Counties and was superintendent of schools in Woods County for 3 terms from 1929 to 1935. She also served as principal of the Avard Schools during World War I I. She married Anton Schnitzer on November 28, 1918 at Woodward. After his death, she went to Globe, Arizona, where she was a librarian. She later went to Bartlesville and she also served as the librarian for Dewey until her retirement.

She was a member of the Alva First Presbyterian Church, the O. F. A., and the Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association, and the National Retired Teachers Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony, on June 3, 1965, and by five sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include a son, Merrill, of Bartlesville, one brother, Arthur Criswell., Enid; and two grandchildren.
