Alva Cemetery


Funeral services for James Harrison Noble will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at the Alva First Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Hook and Pastor Mike Taylor officiating. Interment will be at Alva Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva.

James Harrison Noble, son of the late William Henry and Nellie Mary (Ely) Noble, was born June 28, 1921, in Cheyenne Valley, Okla., and passed away Nov. 30, 2015, in Alva, Okla., at the age of 94 years, 5 months and 2 days.

After James graduated from Cheyenne Valley High School he attended Northwestern State College where he earned his degree in education. He then served in the United States Navy during World War II, went through officer training school in Chicago, then was assigned to Landing Ship Tank 293, where he earned the rank of Lieutenant. He recently took the Flight of Honor to Washington, D.C., to honor World War II veterans.

After the war, he was united in marriage to Eleanor Virginia Greer in Alva. He taught school for several years in Kansas. They later moved to Alva where he farmed and ranched northwest of Alva for many years until moving to the Homestead Retirement home five years ago.

He was a member of the Alva First Baptist Church. James served as Sunday school superintendent for several years. James took pride in providing quality care of his cattle. He taught this same devotion to his grandchildren. Family gatherings often included feeding cattle, moving cattle and working cattle. The grandchildren were always invited to go feed the cattle. His farming operation include wheat production, which in turn led to the wheat harvest with his sons, John and Larry, and daughter, Joy, being the harvest hands and truck driver. Susan and Eleanor kept the crew fed and somehow the wheat always got harvested. In his later years, he harvested with the Sneary family as they helped each other. He was a past board member of the Woods County Cattlemen’s Association and the Woods County Mineral Owners Association.

James took great pleasure in spending time with his children and grandchildren. James was an early riser and he expected you to do the same if you were at his house. He loved to ride horses and enjoyed playing cards and dominoes.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; one son, John Noble; three brothers, William Noble, Allen Noble and Boyd Noble; and four sisters, Mary Violet Noble, Grace Stambaugh, Rosalee Brakely and Mildred Thompson.

James is survived by one son, Larry Noble and wife, Carol, of Flower Mound, Texas; two daughters, Joy Rhodes and husband, Jim, of Fairview, and Susan Scott and husband, Danny, of Alva; eight grandchildren, Lance and Meagan Rhodes, both of Fairview, Amanda Good of Annapolis, Md., Zachary Good of Norman, John Noble of Midland, Texas, Kayla Noble of Timor’Leste, and Sarah and Rachel Noble, both of Flower Mound, Texas; one brother, Charlie Noble of Yale; one sister, Lois Murdoch of Tyler, Texas; other relatives and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Alva First Baptist Church or the Wounded Warriors Project.
