Alva Cemetery


ALVA — A graveside service for Merlene Miller, 86, of Alva, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2010, in Alva Municipal Cemetery with Will Jenkins, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Wharton Funeral Chapel, Alva.

Ellen Merlene, daughter of Anna (Martin) and Charles Maphet was born July 30, 1923, near Gate, Okla. She passed away in the Alva Share Medical Center July 15, 2010, at the age of 86 years, 11 months, and 15 days.

She attended Gate School System, where she graduated from high school. After school she moved to Wichita and worked for Beech Aircraft Plant as "Rosie the Riveter," later moving back to Buffalo and working at the Buffalo Drug Store as a soda jerk.

On April 6, 1947, at First Christian Church in Buffalo, she was married to Edgar Cub Miller.

In 1957, they came to Alva, where she cooked at Longfellow School, worked at Share Convalescent Home and served as a Pink Lady.

Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her husband; her parents and 10 siblings.

Merlene is survived by her son and his wife, Roger and Sharon of Alva; two daughters, Rosalyn and her husband, Court Newkirk of Lawton and Norma Lee Miller of Billings; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
