Alva Cemetery


The funeral for Donald Eckels, 76, of Alva, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church. Dr. Gray Hook will officiate. Burial will be in Alva Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are by Wharton Funeral Chapel, Alva.

He was born Nov. 25, 1931, in the Whitehorse area west of Alva to Marvin Silas and May Rose Tucker Eckels and died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at Share Medical Center, Alva.

He attended Whitehorse rural grade school and graduated from Farry High School in 1949. In 1950, he joined the Army and was discharged in 1954. He married Suzetta Marie Hada April 1, 1955, at Woodward. They made their home in Alva, and he attended Northwestern State College, receiving a degree in industrial arts. He started teaching at Englewood, Cullison and Cimarron high schools. They returned to Alva in 1968, and he started farming and ranching. He also did custom harvesting for over 40 years. He spent the last few years as a trucker hauling grain. He served on the Alva school board several years.

Surviving are his two daughters, Jackie Neal of West Monroe, La., and DeAnna West of Blanchard; two sons, Douglas of Woodward and Duane of Alva; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Memorials may be made to Alva Public School Foundation or Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation for Alzheimer’s.
