Velma Rae, daughter of Beulah Stella (Arndt) and Raymond (Ray) Shafer was born on May 28, 1924, in Alva, Oklahoma. She passed away at the Alva Share Medical Center on the 15th of November at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 17 days.
She attended the Alva School System. During this time she took care of her grandparents and worked various jobs. Miss Shafer was married to Frank John Dennis on April 5, 1945, at Medicine Lodge, Kansas. To their marriage four daughters, Karen Kay, Frances Rae, Betty Jo and Kathy Ann were born. Following their marriage they lived in Alva. Frank passed away on December 1, 2001
Besides being a homemaker and mother she was a member of the VFW Bombshells ladies softball team. She loved horseshoes, croquet and board games. She loved winning. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Verla Bixler; and three brothers, Jess, John Edward and Raymond Junior.
Velma is survived by her four daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Rick Krows of Seiling, Frances and Richard Tanner of Burlington, Betty and Gary Bevis and Karen and LeRoy Swenson, all of Alva; twelve grandchildren, Shelly and Keith LaMay, Jenifer and Steven Cooks, Dennis and Mary Hutchinson, Greg Smith, Elizabeth and Kent Thiessen, Deborah and Clint Gardner, Annette and Shannon Messenger, Darrin and Cheri Bevis, Brian Bevis, Kasey and Matt Adair, Kevin and Kelli Krows; sixteen great grandchildren, Rylan, Shawna, Steven, Bianca, Kara, Tanner, Sydney, Mackenzie, Avery, Ashlyn, Caden, Caleb, Ethan, Kylie, Michael and Mitchell; one great, great grandson, Jove; three brothers and their wives, Gerald and Jennie of Tempe, Arizona; Allen and Pat, and Dean all of Alva; a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at the Alva Municipal Cemetery with Dr. Greg Hook, pastor, Alva First Baptist Church, officiating. Wharton Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may by made online at http://www.whartonfuneralchapel.com/
