Alva Cemetery


The funeral for Marion Lee Benton, 87, of Alva, will be 1 p.m. Friday at Wharton Funeral Chapel, Alva. Burial will be in Alva Municipal Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 19, 1919, west of Alva to Pearl Highfill and Robert Lee Benton and died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Golden Age Nursing Home in Cheney, Kan.

He attended Starr rural grade school and Avard High School.

He married Velma Igean Chambers Feb. 15, 1942, in Wellington, Kan. She died Sept. 27, 1990.

They made their home in Alva until he enlisted in the Army April 6, 1944, where he served with Co. B, 70th Armored Infantry Battalion in the European Theater during World War II, and was discharged at Fort MaCarthur, Calif., March 7, 1946. He returned to Alva to work as a truck driver. In 1957, they moved to Hutchinson, Kan.

Surviving are two daughters, Gwen Burnett of Broken Arrow, and Anita McHenry of Hutchinson, Kan.; one son, Rex of Wichita, Kan.; one sister, Zelma Ruth Strong of Warr Acres; six grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Velma, he was preceded in death by one daughter and a brother.
