Joseph Lewis "J.L." Blakemore, Jr. was born October 20, 1935 in Elk City, Oklahoma to Juanita Pearl (Spears) and Joseph Lewis Blakemore Sr. He passed away June 30, 2019 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 10 days.

J.L. grew up in the Canute community where he attended school. He participated on the Canute baseball team before graduating in 1953. After graduation he worked on the family farm and also worked in construction, helping in building the Eastside Baptist Church and also the construction of the runway at Clinton Sherman Air Force Base in Burns Flat, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the United States Air Force where he did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. Upon returning home from basic training he was married to Delores Kay (Blackmore) on September 7, 1958 in Elk City, Oklahoma. Together they made their home north of Canute on the family farm where they began their family. In 1962 they moved to Oklahoma City where J.L. began working with the Air National Guard at Will Rogers Field where he served as an aircraft mechanic and later worked his way up to a Senior Master Sergeant. J.L. enjoyed farming, raising cattle and golfing. He was a loving and devoted husband and father who never missed a chance to spend time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kay, of the home; 2 children, Robbie Blakemore, Edmond, OK and Lori Downey and husband, Jeff, Yukon, OK; 4 grandchildren, Michael Blakemore and wife, Julia, Nashville, TN, Brett Blakemore, Edmond, OK, Jonathan Downey, Brooklyn, NY and Emily Downey, Yukon, OK and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 5, 2019, 2:30 PM at the Whinery Funeral Service chapel officiated by Ron Fannin.

Burial will be at the Canute Cemetery under the direction of Whinery Funeral Service.
