She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and many
acquaintances developed during her life as a Bartlesville resident for
65 years.
Mabel Irene Miller was born in 1922 on a farm near Geneva, Nebraska. She
was the daughter of Ross and Gertrude (Sughrue) Miller. After five years
in a country school she attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Geneva
for three years and graduated from Geneva High School in May 1939.
During World War II she worked in the War Production Office in
Washington, D.C. and later transferred to the Corps of Engineers where
she worked in their Division Office in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, during
the building of the Alaska Highway. In March 1948, she graduated from
Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Household
Equipment.
She and William James (Jim) Wride were married at St. Cecelia Catholic
Church in Ames, Iowa, on March 29, 1948. They continued to live in Ames
until January 1952. During that time she was a secretary for an Ames
lawyer while Jim finished his requirements for a doctorate in December
1948 at Iowa State College. They lived in Ames for three more years
where Jim worked as a co-owner of a private engineering consulting firm
with his brother-in-law Dick Gayer.
In January 1952 Mabel and her husband Jim moved to Bartlesville,
Oklahoma, where he was employed as a Chemical Engineer by Phillips
Petroleum Company’s R and D Division. She continued to live in
Bartlesville until just recently when she moved to Tulsa to be closer to
her three children.
Mabel was a member of St. John Catholic Church, Sunset Country Club and
Jane Phillips Hospital Auxiliary. She was active in all of these
organizations including
18 years as a volunteer in the hospital recovery room. For several years
she was a tutor of English as a second language for immigrants to the
USA. She was also active in many other volunteer projects and activities
over the years and served as treasurer of several organizations.
After Jim’s retirement from Phillips in 1984, Mabel and Jim continued to
live in Bartlesville and traveled extensively in the U.S. and joined
groups for international travel to Austria, Germany, Switzerland,
Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Jordan, Egypt, Mexico, New Zealand and
Australia.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim Wride; her parents Ross L.
Miller and Gertrude C. Miller; two brothers, Eugene Miller of Nashua,
Iowa, and Paul Miller of Lincoln, Nebraska; and two sisters Dorothy
Gayer of Epsom, New Hampshire, and Mildred Finnegan of Ames, Iowa, an
infant son and son-in-law Anthony (Tony) Cavallo.
She is survived by one son, John Wride of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and two
daughters, Barbara Ferguson and husband Scott of Tulsa and Marilyn
Cavallo of Owasso, Oklahoma, and her sons Anthony Cavallo of Durant, OK,
his wife Lindsay and their three children Luke, A.J. and Emma and
Jeffrey Cavallo of Broken Arrow, OK,
his wife Seanna and their two children Kane and Derek.
A rosary and visitation will be held on Friday, September 1 at 6:00 pm
at Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel, 1600 SE Washington Blvd in Bartlesville,
Oklahoma.
A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, September 2 at 10:00
am at St. John Before the Latin Gate Catholic Church, 715 S Johnstone
Ave, Bartlesville.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. John Catholic
School Building Fund or the charity of your choice.
