Irene Wilip (August 15, 1924 – April 24, 2018), longtime resident of Bartlesville, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2018. She was surrounded by friends and her church family.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 27, 2018, with Reverend William J. Shupe at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Irene was born in Libau/Latvia to Lisa and Kurt von der Recke. She attended school in Libau until she moved to Berlin, where she graduated from Gymnasium/High School. Irene experienced World War II and the difficulties of surviving many nightly bombings. She eventually completed her education at the University in Goethingen, Germany, where she graduated with a degree in Library Science.
In 1949, Irene married her husband, Dr. Elmar Wilip, and both decided to immigrate to Canada. After six years, they moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Irene worked in several libraries and colleges and retired from Deering Library at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Irene and her husband then moved to Bartlesville in 1969 where Dr. Wilip was employed by Phillips Petroleum Company. In Bartlesville, Irene worked for Peters Department Store and she served for many years as a volunteer at Jane Phillips Medical Center. She enjoyed the arts, reading, concerts and theatre.
Irene was a member at Redeemer Lutheran Church, where she attended Sunday School and helped assemble braille bibles.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Lisa and Kurt von der Recke, and her husband, Elmar Wilip.

Irene will be dearly missed by her friends and especially Carolyn Landolph who helped cared for her for the past years and Marianne Hendricks.
