Virgil Leon Johnson, 79, died Tuesday in Roswell, New Mexico. He lived most of his life in his hometown of Dewey, OK, but in 2000, he retired to Roswell to be closer to his son James.

Virgil - or Leon as he was known - was born the son of Charles and Flossie (Hardway) Johnson on Aug. 29, 1937, in Dewey. Leon was raised and educated in the area, graduating from Dewey High School in ’55. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-’58 and was stationed at Ft. Sill. Leon owned Johnson’s Auto in Dewey from ’67-’72, then spent the next 28 years driving trucks for Consolidated Freightways. Through the years Leon was an avid hunter and gun enthusiast.

Leon is survived by his son James D. Johnson of Roswell; three sisters Carrie Cummins of Dewey, Jo Ann Robinson of Owasso, and Cherria Lee Hunt of San Antonio, TX; step daughter, Deborah Romero and Ruby of San Diego, CA; step son Andrew Arnold of Fredericksburg, CO; five grandchildren, Catrina Gomez and Fernando of San Diego, Brandon Arnold and Amanda of Roswell, Cara Arnold of Hobbs, NM, Robbi Cook and Brent of San Diego, and Santiago Romero of Roswell; seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 28 years Kitty Johnson.

Visitation will be held Fri. 10-8 and Sat. 9-12. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch Alumni Association, 603 Sunlight Drive, Arlington, TX 76006.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sat., Aug. 5, at the Davis Family Funeral Home Chapel, 918-534-3030, 113 S. Osage (Hwy. 75), Dewey.

Interment will follow in the Dewey Cemetery with full military honors provided by the James H. Teel American Legion Post 105 Honor Guard.

Services are under the direction of Carter Davis and the Davis Family Funeral Home.
