Ransford J. Johnston, 87, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002.
Graveside services will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Eureka, Calif. Local
arrangements are by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell St.
Mr. Johnston was born in Washington state and lived for a time in Alaska,
where his father was a gold miner. Later the family moved to California. He
resided there until he retired in Amarillo in the 1980s.
He served in the Navy aboard the USS California and in the Merchant Marines
during World War II. During his lifetime, he has had more than one successful
career, first in Southern California as an electronic technician and carpenter,
then in Eureka as a truck driver and volunteer fireman.
The family moved to the San Francisco Bay area in the 1950s. There he went
back to college and upon graduation, became an electronic engineer working
for Dr. Shockley, founder of the modern transistor. It was there that he
designed the first transistorized clock.
Finally, he left his lucrative career in the bay area for another highly successful
career as a real estate broker in Blue Lake Springs, a recreation community in
the mountains above Sacramento.
His company, Jon-Do Realty, sold mountain property and served as a cabin
rental service. He designed and built mountain cabins and owned a
delicatessen, managed by his wife.
During this time, he was active in various community activities, as well as
serving on the realty board and as a volunteer ambulance driver.
He was generous and caring man who helped so many during his lifetime. He
will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alpha and Perry Johnston; and his
beloved wife of 47 years, Zelma Johnston.
Survivors include his second wife and longtime family friend, Irmgard; three
children, Randy Johnston of Tulsa, Okla., Doug Rischbieter of Arnold, Calif.,
and Barbara Bunner of Spring; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter;
and a brother, Hal W. Johnston of Seattle.
The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.
