Wilma Oweta Fisher Davis was born February 25, 1932 at Madill, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Alfred Fidela Fisher and Emma T. Gulledge Fisher. Wilma passed away Monday, October 20, 2008 at University Village in Tulsa, Oklahoma, following a lengthy and courageous fight against cancer. She was 76 years of age.
Wilma was the last surviving member of a large and loving family. Raising a large family in rural Oklahoma during the Great Depression and in the middle of the Dust Bowl was difficult and the family often found themselves joining other Okies on Route 66 to work in the orange groves around Corona, California. Wilma graduated from Corona High School, Class of 1950. After graduation her long legs and dazzling smile earned her the title of Miss Corona.
Soon after graduation, Wilma joined the U.S. Marine Corp and rose to the rank of Sergeant. After leaving the Marines, Wilma started her own family and finished her degree at Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, Louisiana with a BA in Education in 1959. Her lifetime career of teaching enabled her to share her love of reading with thousands of children throughout Oklahoma and California.
She was a member of the Methodist Church. In her spare time she enjoyed quilting, movies and teaching her grandchildren how to read.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Paul, Leslie, Ray, Billy Joe & Jerry Fisher; two sisters, Dicie Bower and Hazel Rogers.
