Helen W. James, 73, of Sallisaw died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, in Fort Smith, Ark. Services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at Immanuel Baptist Church, Sallisaw. David Ward, Pastor Kevin Peterson, Sam McCawley and Carroll Huggins officiated. Burial was in the Sallisaw City Cemetery, Sallisaw.
Pallbearers were Larry Hensley, Perry Kuykendall, Frank Pendergrass, John Ruestow, Allen Steely, Sam Tiffany and Chris Hensley. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Sinclair Armstrong, Brian Drywater, Bob Fletcher, Winston Hardin, Jerry Latty, H.T. Steely and Perry Wheeler and the 55 Plus Men and Women’s Sunday School Class.
Helen was born Oct.17, 1935 in the Badger Lee community to William Henry and Modene (Steely) Woods. She married William Kenneth James Sr. on July 19, 1952, in Sallisaw.She was the executive director of Cookson Hills Community Action for 38 and one-half years. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
Helen was preceded in death by her father and one sister, JoEllen Fletcher.
Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Ken, of the home; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Bill and Rhonda, of Sallisaw, and Mark Dewayne James, of Bella Vista; five grandchildren: Tricia and husband, David Stubbs, of Farmers Branch, Texas; Marcinda and husband, Brad Myers, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Kenny and wife, Andrea Knight, of Broken Arrow; Robert and wife, Jaki James, of Flower Mounds, Texas; and Nicole James, of Lake Charles, La.; five great-grandchildren: Kassidy and Haley Myers, Zurri Knight and Kaden and Austen James; her mother, Modene Steely Woods, of Sallisaw; one sister and brother-in-law, Fran and Nelson Bewley, of Sallisaw; one aunt, Emma Tiffany, of Norman; one niece, Robbi and husband Jeff Martin, of Owasso; twin great-niece and -nephew, Rider and Josie Martin; several relatives and friends.
