Hazel Carter was born on January 12, 1914 in Chelsea, Oklahoma to William Orville and Myrtle Mae (Martin Carter. There were 9 children born to this family including Hazel, they included four brothers Deece, Jess, Bobby and Jerry Carter and her five sisters Mary Sue Carter Harrell and Amy Carter Tatum, Eva Mae Carter Miller, Sara Carter Patton, and Dorothy Carter Shields.
Hazel married Gus Cleo Robertson May 12, 1968 in San Jose California where he was School Superintendent, they moved back to Chelsea in 1972 when Gus took over as Superintendent of the Chelsea School System, he also served as Chelsea Mayor from 1984 until 1990. Hazel was very devoted to her husband’s career. She was very fond of animals, especially her beloved dog Charlie.
