George Baker

The death of George Baker at his home in Kiowa Township on Wednesday Feb 9, 1916, at the age of 78 years 9 months and 14 days, marks the passing of one of the most highly respected pioneer settler of Roger Mills County.

He was born at Beardstown, Cass County, Illinois, on April 27, 1837 and moved with his relatives at the age of 19 years to Mo., where he lived for many years.

He was married to Miss Nannie Horner on July 21, 1861 and of this union Six children were born. Two of whom closed their eyes against the sins of this world in early childhood. His four children that survives him are Mrs. Margaret Haith of Osceola, Mo., Mrs. Ruth Law of Rankin, Oklahoma, A.J. Baker of Los Angeles, Calif., and S.R. Baker, who lived with his parents at their home.

His life was a busy and charitable one being ever ready to give to the needy, were there any such around him.

In the early days when he with his wife and son came to this county it required a great deal of courage and fortitude to bear the trials met and overcome. But he always met every new trial with a courage born of Christian patience with a desire to do all that human energy could do to help make a home that would give comfort and pleasure to those around him.

The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Sherman, Pastor of the Methodist Church of Rankin.

He was laid to rest in the Rankin (White Rose) Cemetery, Reydon, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma.

He leaves an aged widow, his children and many friends and neighbors to mourn his loss.
