HAROLD BARTLETT MAY

Jan. 24, 1915 - Jan. 20, 2009

Longtime Shawnee resident, Harold Bartlett May, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009. He was 93.

He was born Jan.24, 1915 in Bartholomew Co., Ind., to Charles and Nora May.

He came to Shawnee in 1936. He was married in Shawnee to Mary Louise Polston, Dec. 9, 1939. He attended school in Columbus, Ind., where he graduated from High School in 1934. He also attended Mississippi State College on a double scholarship in football and basketball, Oklahoma Baptist University and The University of Oklahoma. He was an avid OU football fan.

He was employed by Amoco Pipe Line Co. from 1939 until his retirement in 1965. He was also in the farming and ranching business N.E. of Shawnee - retiring in 1984.

During World War II he served as a Civilian Flight Instructor and was later transferred to the Ferry Command, Long Beach, Calif., until his discharge in 1944.

Mr. May was a long time member of Hilltop Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and as a Sunday school teacher for a number of years. He served on various committees and was a member of the church council. He was also a Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the Shawnee Blue Lodge #107. Other memberships include Pott Co. Cattleman Assoc., Oklahoma Farm Bureau, Oklahoma Farmers' Union and a former member of Gideon International.
