JAMES DELBERT AKIN

22 Nov 1927 - 16 Nov 2014

James Delbert Akin, 86 of Midwest City, Oklahoma passed from this life into the loving arms of his savior Jesus Christ on Nov 16, 2014. Delbert was born Nov 22, 1927 to Daniel and Anna Akin in Maud, Ok. He began this ministry at the First FWB church in Tecumseh, Ok on June 10, 1951. He has pastored the following FWB churches all of which are in Oklahoma: Tecumseh Church, 1951-1956; Ada First, 1956-1963; Norman First, 1963-1967; Spencer Road, 1967-1968; Ada First, 1968-1977; Ardmore First, 1977-1980; Westgate, Shawnee, as a missionary for First OK association 1980-1989; Tecumseh 1989-1991; Wolf church 1991-1993; Choctaw 1993-2004; Senior Adult Pastor at Harrah FWB Church 2004 to present.

Akin has been active in serving his denomination while serving as a pastor. He was Oklahoma Executive Secretary 1953-1955 on a part-time basis, a member of the State Mission board 1955-1975, member of the National Home Mission board 1974-1985, and a member of the Hillsdale College Board of Trustees, 1975-1985. He was on the faculty of Hillsdale College for a number of years, 1965-1989, teaching English and Speech and was director of the Ministerial Intern program. He was a member of the Ministers Quartet for 43 years, and United Commercial Travelers 1960-present where he served as International Secretary Treasurer for a number of years.

Delbert is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Akin; daughter Judi; brother Verdane; sister Stella; and parents Daniel and Anna.

He is survived by his wife Virginia Akin; daughters Jan Cornelius and Kim and Anothony Dean; sons Phil and Anita Akin and Larry Bates; grandchildren Elaine and Kirk Taylor; Whitney Randell; Cliff Randell; Leah and Voth Doug; Ben and Kim Randell; Travis and Tiffany Roberts; Tiffany and Jeremiah Broyles; Bailey and Stephanie Akin; Andrew Theiss; Jamie and Adam Hull; and 17 great-grandchildren. Delbert is also survived by his brother Leroy and Maudie Akin; sisters-in-law Martie Akin, Nancy and Lonnie Martin, and Patricia and Ray Anderson; brother-in-law Tom Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Ford Funeral Service Thursday from 6-8PM. Services will be held at 10AM Friday Nov. 21, 2014 at Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College in Moore. Burial will follow at 1:30PM on Friday at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College.
