ELIZABETH SHORTER
1925 - 2012


Elizabeth Mayes Shorter, 87, of Shawnee, passed away Friday, August 31, 2012, in Shawnee.
She was born April 24, 1925 to William and Rillie Cook Mayes in Stratford, Oklahoma.
Elizabeth was raised and attended school in Stratford. At the age of 17 she moved to Shawnee where she met her future husband in front of the Ritz Theater and they were married for 53 years.
She has been a resident of Shawnee ever since.
She married Harrold Shorter on February 27, 1943 in Chandler, Oklahoma and he preceded her in death on June 6, 1996.
Elizabeth was the owner and operator of the Lazy J Cafe in Shawnee and Lloyd Sundries. She loved going fishing with her husband, Harrold and spending time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harrold Shorter; son, Arley Shorter; three sisters, Opal Rycroft, Virginia Gibson, Jewel Mayes; and two brothers, Lester Mayes and John Mayes.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Jerry Shorter, of Shawnee; grandchildren, Arley Ernest Shorter and Tammy Shorter; one sister, Frances Brown; special friend Gene Smith; and extended family and friends.
Visitation will be 1:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 3, and continue through service time.
Service will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 4, at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Wayne Sloan and Reverend Steven Brown officiating.
Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
