JOHN DALE ROE
1917 - 2008


John Dale Roe died on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 in Tulsa at the age of 91.
Born January 10, 1917 in Oklahoma City, John was the youngest of four children born to Charles and Blanche Roe.
He graduated in 1936 from Central High School in Oklahoma City.
John lived most of his adult life in Shawnee, where he met and married the former Betty Barnes. John and Betty celebrated 63 years of marriage and saw their family grow and prosper.
John worked for the Rock Island Railroad for thirty three years, retiring as an engineer.
He served in the Seabees and was stationed in the Philippines during World War II.
He and Betty were active members of the First Christian Church of Shawnee, and were long-time members of the Star Sunday School class. John was also an active member of the local chapters of AARP and NARVE.
John was known for his willingness to help others. He was a handyman extraordinaire. In addition to growing beautiful roses, he was particularly proud of the Christmas ladders that he made, sold, and shipped all over the world.
Loved and respected by friends and family alike, he will be truly missed.
John was preceded in death by his wife Betty; his three siblings, Ellen Reynolds, Hubert, and Glenn Roe.
He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Peggy Roe of Houston; and Harvie and Jane Anne Roe of Tulsa; six grandchildren, Price Roe and his wife Peggy of Washington, D. C.; Haise Borgmann and her husband Kevin of Washington, D. C.; Taylor Roe of Houston, Texas; Mindy Galoob and her husband, Stephen of Berkley, California; Blair Gaddis and her husband, Clayton of Berkley, California; and Holly Roe of Norman, Oklahoma; and five great-grandchildren, Avery, Walker, and Leighton Borgmann; Sam Galoob; and Rush Roe.
John’s family will receive friends at Walker Funeral Service, 201 E. 45th in Shawnee on Sunday, October 19, at 6:00 p.m.
Service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Shawnee with Pastor Janet Peery officiating.
Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Betty J. and John D. Roe Scholarship Fund at the First Christian Church, 1625 N. Broadway, Shawnee, Oklahoma 74804.
