ELIZABETH ALICE HUGHES
1918 - 1997


Lifelong Shawnee resident Elizabeth Alice Turner Hughes died Wednesday at a local hospital. She was 79.
She was born in Shawnee on May 8, 1918, the daughter of John and Willie Turner.
She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1936 and attended Oklahoma Baptist University. She graduated in 1940 with teaching credentials.
She married Willis James Hughes in 1942.
She taught in Shawnee Public Schools early in her career and later assisted with the development of an arts and crafts program with Shawnee Parks and Recreation Department. She also taught classes in restoration of antique trunks.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by her sons, Willis James Hughes II, Shiprock, New Mexico; Greg Hughes, Shawnee; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Debbie Hughes, Naperville, Illinois; grandchildren, Florence, Martha, Brandy and Adriane; and sister-in-law, Anita Turner of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband and one brother.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with J.C. Farrand officiating.
Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the Shawnee Senior Citizens Center, 400 N. Bell, Shawnee, OK 74801.
