JAMES W. CARTHEN
1952 - 2011


James W. Carthen, 59, of Shawnee, passed away, Wednesday, September 21, 2011, in Pocahontas, Iowa.
He was born July 23, 1952, to George and Inez Brown Carthen in Shawnee.
James was raised in Brooksville and graduated with the class of 1970 from Macomb High School.
He proudly served his country by enlisting in the U .S. Army after graduation and served as a medic while in the Army.
After being honorably discharged from the Army, he returned home and worked as an EMT.
James married Delinda Dixon on July 23, 1992, in Shawnee.
After working as an EMT for several years, James became a long haul trucker, transporting wind energy equipment.
He was a member of St. John Baptist Church.
James loved to play chess and was a movie fanatic. He loved playing games with his grandchildren and was an excellent artist.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Inez Carthen and one sister, Evelyn Carthen.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Delinda of Shawnee; daughters, Monzella Cottrell of Jenks; Lakedia Dean of Oklahoma City; Stephanie Greer and Shaina Horne of Tecumseh; son, Kevin Horne of Shawnee; brothers, Cecil and Linda Carthen of Sacramento, California; Eugean Carthen of Wichita, Kansas; Thurman and Mayella Carthen of Reno, Nevada; Welton and Schelby Carthen of Shawnee; Reverend Charles and Ernie Carthen of Brooksville; and Dwain and Donna Carthen of Shawnee; nine grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and numerous other family and friends.
Visitation will begin 9:00 a.m., Monday, September 26, and continue through time of service.
Service will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 27, at St. John Baptist Church with Reverend Lee Oliver officiating.
Burial will follow at Brooksville Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
