EMSLEY FLOYD AKIN, JR.

February 03, 1924 - November 26, 2017

Emsley Floyd Akin, Jr., 93 of Maud, Oklahoma passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017 at his home.

He was born February 3, 1924 to Emsely Floyd Akin, Sr. and Grace Mahala (Bradburn) Akin in Cook, Oklahoma.

Floyd was raised in Remus, between Maud and Tecumseh. He attended Remus Elementary School grades 1st thru 8th and was a 1942 graduate of Maud High School.

Floyd served his country proudly in the U.S. Army Aircorp during WWII where he became Sergeant and was stationed in the Pacific Theater until the war ended. He served on the first Primitive Radar Unit at Funafuti in the Gilbert Islands and on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii.

After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1945, Floyd went to work for Sinclair Oil and Gas in St. Louis, Oklahoma.

He married Verna Marie Allen on July 3, 1947 in Tecumseh, Oklahoma. They were married by Floyd’s great-uncle, the Reverend Joe Macon, who had married Floyd’s parents. Floyd and Verna celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on July 3, 2017 at their home on the family centennial farm.

Floyd and Verna moved to Floyd’s family’s farm in Maud in 1964 where they raised their family. The family farm was designated a Centennial Farm in 2004. Floyd worked for Sinclair Oil & Gas, Arco, and British Petroleum until 1985. After retiring from B.P., Floyd became an independent oil producer. Floyd also had a love for cattle and raised cattle for many years until his health declined.

Floyd was a past school board member of Maud Public Schools. He was a member of the Retired Sinclair & Arco Club. He was a board member for the Maud Historical Society. Floyd was a member and Elder Emeritus of the First Christian Church of Seminole.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emsley Floyd, Sr. and Grace Mahala Akin; and 2 sisters, Genevieve Brown and Mary Alice Kindle.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of over 70 years, Verna Akin of the home; 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law, Danny Floyd Akin of Shawnee, OK, Gary Allen and Edie Akin of Shawnee, OK and Ricky Dale and Jennifer Akin of Steamboat Springs, CO; granddaughter and spouse, Meredith Marie (Akin) and Jason Tyler of Norman, OK; grandson, Garrett Brook Akin of Shawnee, OK, grandson, Corey Akin of Oklahoma City, granddaughter, Mary Akin of Shawnee, OK and granddaughter, Sarah Akin of Shawnee, OK; great-granddaughter, Brooklynn Marie Tyler of Norman, OK; great-grandson, Holten Gray Tyler of Norman, OK; brother, Jimmy Akin of Norman, OK; and other extended family and friends.

The family has designated the following organizations, Disciple Missions Fund, P.O. Box 1986, Indianapolis, IN 46206, Cookson Hills Christian Ministries, 60416 Highway 10, Kansas, OK 74347, InterFaith Ministries, 813 N. Main Street, Seminole, OK 74868 and Texoma Christian Camp, 15448 Texoma Christian Camp Road, Kingston, OK 73439 as appropriate for memorials in lieu of flowers.

Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 28, 2017 and continue through service time. Family gathering to greet friends and family will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at Cooper Funeral Home. Service will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with Glenn Pence and Ray Belford officiating. Burial will follow at Cummings Cemetery in Maud, OK under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
