Services for Billy Joe Smoot, 80, of Ada are 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Morris Memorial Baptist Church, Revs. David Fensler and Brent Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery.
Mr. Smoot passed away Monday, February 12, 2018 at a local nursing home. He was born December 25, 1937 in Ada to Thomas Peyton and Helen Marie Rice Smoot. He attended Cottonwood grade school and graduated from Coalgate High School.
He married Luella Casey August 12, 1960 in Oklahoma City. Mr. Smoot served in the U. S. Army from 1960 -62 and four years Active Reserves, 3 VD Howister Division, 6th Artillery at Ft. Sill in Lawton. He and his family moved back to Ada and he worked at Marian Fenton Pontiac, owned and operated Bill’s Texaco in Ada, drove an eighteen wheeler for Chemical Express and Melton. After retiring, he worked for Pontotoc County District #2 as well as taking care of and maintaining Morris Memorial Baptist Church for 26 years. Mr. Smoot was a longtime member of Morris Memorial Baptist Church in Latta.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Luella, of the home; four daughters, Luann Rinowski and husband Matt of Tulsa, Nell Wheat and husband Paul of Phoenix, AZ, Connie Merriman and husband Randy of Holdenville and Sherry Smoot of Latta; his grandchildren, Jason Thomas, Robert Schawo, Laura Merriman, Katie Depew, Casey Lefever, Jesse Lefever and John Wheat; step-grandchildren, Chase Lawrence, Paula Christian, Ben Rinowski and Louis Rinowski; a brother, James Smoot; sister, Carolyn Whiteley; sister-in-law, Mary Smoot; brothers-in-law, Alan Casey and Larry Casey; and many nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren; and beloved friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Tommy Gene Smoot; son-in-law, Charles Kenneth (Kenny) Thomas; and grandsons, Randall (Tyler) Merriman and Kevin Schawo.
Bearers will be Jason Thomas, Robert Schawo, Laura Merriman, Katie Depew, Casey Lefever, Jesse Lefever and John Wheat. Honorary bearers will be Matt Rinowski, Randy Merriman, Paul Wheat, Alan Casey, Larry Casey, Kenny McWhorter, Cloanne Brundridge, Lee Jarrett, Wayne Bryant, Wayne Biggs, Linda Franks, and Wanda Stout Osborn.
