Ike Holland © Hartshorne Sun August 17, 2003 Submitted by: Genea Bohanon
Ike Holland was killed in a powder explosion which occurred in the Rock Island Coal Co's mines at Gowen, Friday morning last. Fourteen kegs of powder loaded on a pit car, exploded, supposedly from an electrical spark, within about ten feet of Holland, who was operating the motor car to which was attached the car loaded with powder. Although the limbs were frightfully mutilated, death did not follow until about 9 o'clock that night.
The deceased was well-known here, being a son-in-law of J. M. Ledbetter, and was held in high esteem for his ever genial disposition. His wife survives him. The remains were interred in the Hartshorne cemetery Saturday afternoon.
