J. J. Day, for a long time a familiar figure in Hartshorne, honored and respected, though for many years feeble and ____ passed over on the other side, Saturday at the home of his son, Judge Jean P. Day in McAlester. Monday's News-Capital contained the following sketch: Judge J. J. Day, aged 70, died Saturday at the home of his son, Judge Jean P. Day, 506 East Seminole Avenue, after a four months illness due to old age.

The funeral service was conducted from the family residence in Hartshorne by Rev. Howell of the Christian Church and burial was in the Hartshorne Cemetery.Judge J. J. Day was born in 1845 in Alabama, but removed during his childhood days to Calhoun County, Mississippi, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits, Judge Day came to Oklahoma as an 89er he and his son Jean P. Day, being among those who made the memorable dash across the lines for homes in that year. The elder Day staked a claim in Oklahoma County, not far from Oklahoma City, resided there, engaged in farming, until 1901 when he came to Hartshorne.

Judge Day's health had been poor for the past few years. His wife died May 29, 1914, and since that time has declined rapidly. Both he and his wife were lifelong members of the Congregational Church.

Deceased was a man of wide information, who took an active intrest in the affairs of his community and was looked to for advice and leadership in local matters by his friends and neighbors. During his residence in Oklahoma County he was active in local politics and served for many years as justice of the peace there.

Due to the fact that there was no published announcement of the death, few people in Hartshorne had any knowledge of the funeral until the funeral occurred.
