CUSHING--Charles Frederick Schultz was closely involved in the launch of John Glenn into the earth's orbit aboard a Mercury capsule.

Schultz died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 1997, in the Cushing Regional Hospital at the age of 66.

Services were at 10 a.m. today, Oct. 31, at the First United Methodist Church in Cushing, with the Rev. Dr. Chris Thompson officiating. Burial followed in the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Stillwater.

Services were under the direction of the Davis Funeral Home, Cushing.

Schultz was born June 27, 1931, to Clarence and Clara (Riekenberg) Schultz, in Fairmont. Most of his childhood was spent in Bartlesville. He graduated from Cushing High School in 1949, and during high school he served as the sports editor for the high school newspaper, was valedictorian of the senior class, and sang in the glee club and was involved in several plays.

He attended Oklahoma A M, later attending and graduating from Washington University in St. Louis, with a masters degree in business administration.

He married Margaret Meeker in April of 1952. To this union, three children were born: Claire, Jim, and Jane.

He married Jean Roll Martin April 8, 1995, in Houston, Texas, and the couple came to Cushing in April of 1996.

Schultz served in the United States Air Force for three years. He then worked as an aerospace engineer for McDonnell Douglas Corporation fro 35 years. He participated in the development of the Mercury, Gemini and Skylab vehicles, and the F-15 and AV-8B fighter aircrafts. He was closely involved in he launch of John Glenn into the earth's orbit aboard a Mercury capsule.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret, Oct. 30, 1992 and his mother, Clara. He is survived by his second wife, Jean, of the home; his father, the Rev. Clarence Schultz, of Springfield, Ill.; his children Claire Grabiak and her husband Ray, of St. Louis, Mo., Jim Schultz of St. Louis, Mo., Jane Curtis and her husband Steve, of Tacoma, Wash., Chris Martin and his wife Cindy, Kimberly Kyle and her husband Karl, and Beth Wilfong, all of Houston; and Rob Martin of Austin, Texas; one brother, Jim Schultz and his wife Mary, of Springfield, Ill.; eight grandchildren; two nephews; one niece; and other relatives and friends.
