George Walton Morgan Sr., longtime Cushing resident passed away Thursday evening, April 21, 2011 at Linwood Village Nursing Home in Cushing. He was 88 years old.

George was born on April 6, 1923 in Cushing to George Dennis Morgan and Viola Polk Morgan.

He grew up and attended school in Cushing.

On November 11, 1942, he married Betty Taylor in Cushing and had two sons.

George loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. In his younger years, he also enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, roller skating, and bicycling.

George was the local bread delivery man for more than 30 years. He worked for Bond Bread and then Wonder Bread where he retired in the early 1980s. Next, George spent many years working with his wife as gate attendants for the Corp of Engineers at Keystone Lake, Heyburn Lake, and Oologah Lake in Oklahoma.

George was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the U.S. Army 29th Infantry Division, 554th anti-aircraft artillery automatic weapons battalion. He was part of the 944 D-Day Invasion of France.

George will be remembered as a hardworking, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.

George is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Betty Taylor Morgan; son George Morgan and wife Judy of Coffeyville, KS; and son Jerry Morgan and wife Alice of Tulsa, OK; a sister Wanda McKinney of El Reno, OK; five grandchildren Tammy Morgan White and husband David of St George, KS; Amy Morgan Bigbie and husband Shaun of South Coffeyville,OK; Kerri Morgan Wiley and husband Mark of Cushing, OK; Melissa Morgan Boles and husband Patrick of Cushing, OK; and Greg Morgan and wife Brandy of Drumright, OK; and ten great-grandchildren George Dille, Clint Dille, Fulton Buckner, Marcie Wiley, Kory Wiley, Garrett Crossley, Marissa van Zant, Heath Morgan, Hayden Morgan, and Hope Morgan; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Viola; his father, George Morgan; his stepmother, Billie Morgan; a sister, Beulah Pearl (BP) Hauptfleisch; and a step brother Frank Higgins.

A Rosary is planned for 7 pm Monday April 25 and a Funeral Mass at 10 am Tuesday April 26, both at St.’s Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cushing with Father Matt LaChance presiding.

Burial will follow at the Fairlawn Cemetery.

George’s great grandchildren will serve as pallbearers and nephews Tom and Pat Brennan will serve as ushers during the services.
