Samuel Henry Kautz, age 89 of Perkins, passed from this life on April 22, 2015 at his home.
A funeral service will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church on Tuesday April 28, at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Mike Cannon and Brother Ray Norrie will be the officiants. Songs will be by Bob Duke.
Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Stillwater. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Sam was born September 14, 1925 in Cushing, Oklahoma. He was born at home on the farm, along with his identical twin brother, Benjamin. Sam’s parents were John Henry and Margaret Ellen Koble Kautz.
Sam, along with his eight siblings, assisted his parents in the operation of their 160-acre farm near Stillwater. They raised and harvested corn, small grains and hay. Sam and Ben were so determined to get an education that they rode their bicycles five miles every day for a year until the bus finally started coming to their house.They graduated from Stillwater High School in 1943. Soon after that the armed forces notified them they would be drafted. Their father asked the authorities to keep them together. They did keep them together until Ben was injured and sent to Hawaii.
Sam served in WWII in the Asian Theatre. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal. Only 4 men from their company made it home alive – including Sam and Ben.
After he returned from the service, he married Alma Louise VanGilder on July 6, 1947 in Stillwater.
He then went on to graduate from A & M College in Agricultural Science.
He worked at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City until he took early retirement due to medical reasons.
Sam & Louise lived most of their married life in the Oklahoma City Area. After retirement, they bought a farm near Perkins.
They were founding members of Immanuel Baptist Church in Perkins, where Sam was a deacon.
They loved to travel in their 5th wheel with their friends in the Rolling Rockers. Sam loved to golf and was on a senior citizens bowling team for many years. He loved gardening and taking care of his fruit trees.
Sam is predeceased in death by his parents; one son, Michael J. of Perkins; four brothers: Karl, Raymond, LeRoy and Benjamin; and three sisters: Muriel Adams Robinson, Katherine Meeks and Margaret Fields. Sam also had an older brother – Georgie that died at the age of 2 years old.
Sam is survived by his wife Louise of the home; one sister, Betty Rosiere and husband George of Nicoma Park; three children: David Henry and wife Ruby of Perkins, Stanley Wayne and wife Derrilyn of Edmond, and Mary Louise Cundiff and husband Steven of Perkins; eight grandchildren: Tara Lavigne and husband Ted of Perkins, Richard Kautz and wife Maggie of Perkins, Samuel Kautz and wife Ty of Dallas, Benjamin Kautz of Edmond, Skyler Cundiff and wife Virginia of Stillwater, Stephanie Cundiff of Perkins, Sabrina Cundiff of Stillwater, and Shelby Cundiff of Perkins; and nine great grandchildren: Kyle and Kayla Robinson, Keith, Christopher & David Lavigne, Ashlee& Janelle Kautz, Julia and Jayden Cundiff.
Memorial donations may be made in Sam’s name to Companion Healthcare, 1314 E Oklahoma Ave, Guthrie, OK 73044.
