James “Jay” Johnson, longtime rancher and resident of Yale, passed away Monday, June 11, 2007 in the St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa at the age of 84 years.

The son of the late John Alfred Johnson and Hazel Alice Hoskins Johnson, Jay was born on August 17, 1922, west of Yale, OK and was reared and educated in the Yale area, attending Battleridge Schools.

He was united in marriage to Irene White on November 14, 1941 southwest of Yale and to this union one daughter, Trudy was born.

Jay owned and operated the Johnson garage in Yale for several years before devoting full time to the ranching and cattle business.

Jay had been very active in the Yale community, serving on the Yale School Board for over 15 years; he was a retired firefighter; had served for many years as a Payne County Posse member under Sheriff Frank Phillips; served on the Payne County Water Board # 4; the Yale Housing Authority and had been a 60 year member of the American Legion, having served his country in the United States Army during World War II, where he received a purple heart, three bronze metals and one silver star metal, receiving his honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant.

Survivors include his wife of over 65 years, Irene (White) Johnson of the home; one daughter Trudy Shelley of Yale; one sister Pauline Doll of Yale; one brother Wayne Whitey Johnson of McAlister, MT; three grandchildren, Russell Shelley and his wife Sheri of Drumright, Kristin Collier and her husband Carey of Cushing and Toni Winterbottom and her husband Steve of Yale; nine great-grandchildren, Kaylee Fowler, Karson Fowler, Konner Fowler, Madalynn Collier, Carly Shelley, Dalton Shelley, Dryden Winterbottom, Jake Winterbottom and Jayme Winterbottom; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Kenneth “Pee Wee” Johnson.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2007 at 2 P.M. in the First Baptist Church of Yale with Brother Michael Dershem, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Lawson Cemetery at Yale.
