Emil Ernest Kastl
November 16, 1919 ~ March 2012

Emil Ernest Kastl was born November 16, 1919 in Yukon, OK to Julia Antonia [Hanska] Kastl and Anton Peter Kastl. He attended Yukon High School and lettered in football, track and basketball, graduating in 1939.

When his parents bought a farm southeast of Stillwater, Emil joined them to help on the farm. They milked dairy cows and Emil had a milk route, picking up 10 gallon milk cans from area farmers and delivering the milk to the creamery in Stillwater.

Emil married Pauline Johnson of Perkins, OK on October 22, 1944 at St. Francis Xavier Church, Stillwater, OK. Emil started a custom seed business that allowed him to purchase the farm that he and Pauline worked. He continued to farm and began selling insurance in the 1950's for Oklahoma Farmers Union. Emil served on the Central Rural Electric Cooperative board in the 50's, working to bring electricity for rural Payne County.

In 1958, Emil was elected Oklahoma Farmers Union state secretary/treasurer by its membership. During his 28 year tenure as state secretary, Emil worked to build up the state membership to over 113,000 members statewide by the 1980's. Many Oklahoma rural youths were influenced by Emil's involvement with the OFU summer camps, speech contests, and the Eastern U.S. tour bus trip award for the state speech contest winners. Emil organized and led numerous trips for OFU members over the years. The annual Eastern tour included stops in Washington, D.C. to see Oklahoma Congressmen, Philadelphia and New York City. Emil also organized trips to Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and the Northwest U.S. These OFU trips allowed many rural Oklahomans to see states and countries they might never have seen.

In the 1980's, Emil organized a statewide Farm Crisis Rally to highlight the inequities of price supports for farm products, which resulted in some Oklahoma farmers attending national rallies in Des Moines, Iowa and Washington, D.C. He was also instrumental in setting up hay relief efforts during drought years to bring in hay from out of state for Oklahoma ranchers. Emil was a champion of the cooperative system to assist farmers in obtaining services and products at lower prices. He was a charter member of the Perkins Co-op, organized in 1976. Emil was a supporter of local 4-H and FFA members, purchasing numerous show animals over the years, and putting premiums on many other animals.

Emil was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Stillwater, OK for 71 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, achieving 4th Degree. Emil was also an active member of the Perkins Lion Club for over 20 years. Emil loved his OSU Cowboys, whether they were playing football, basketball, baseball, or wrestling.

Emil was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Louis and Edward Kastl; two infant children, Beverly and Timothy Kastl; and a daughter-in-law, Teresa Kastl.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline of Blackwell, OK, and children, Mike Kastl of Edmond, OK, Connie Brashears and husband Bart of Blackwell, OK, and Dennis Kastl and wife Judi of Stillwater, OK. Grandchildren include: Jill Cobb and husband Jason of Edmond, OK, Andrea McCoy and husband Jared of Edmond, OK, Angela Studnek and husband Jon of Charlotte, NC, Christopher Brashears of Vatican City, Rome, and Amanda Jones and husband Kyle of Paris, France. Great grandchildren include: Jamie and Jacey Cobb, Addison McCoy, Abigail, Emma, and Julia Studnek, and Annamarie Jones.

A Vigil for the Deceased will be Friday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the Strode Funeral Home Chapel, 610 S. Duncan, Stillwater, OK preceded by a visitation time with family and friends at 6:00. Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, March 10 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, 601 S. West St. in Stillwater. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Perkins, OK. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Seminarian Education Fund, Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, PO Box 32180, Oklahoma City, OK 73123 or the Diocese of Tulsa Vocations Office, PO Box 690240, Tulsa, OK 74169-0240.
