John Lawrence Houchin passed from this life on October 16, 2022, at the age of 75, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

John was born on August 17, 1947, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, the son of Alfred Lawrence and Mary Louise (Crutchmer) Houchin. John grew up in Tulsa, attending Burbank Elementary and Bell Junior High school, graduating from Nathan Hale High School with the Class of 1965. Following high school, John attended college at Oklahoma State University. He began working in the electrical business during college and decided to follow that as his career. On March 31, 1967, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, John was united in marriage to Pamala Hilton, and to that union, there are two daughters, Stephanie and Lori. In the early 1970s, John attended the IBEW apprenticeship program. In June 1974, John opened Houchin Electric out of his home with one truck. Following his training at Local 584, John went on to own and operate his successful business, currently employing nearly 40 people. John worked tirelessly throughout his career, building and establishing a company known throughout the Tulsa Market. Then on April 17, 2004, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, during the 30th anniversary of Houchin Electric, John was united in marriage to Lynda Ruth Glasgow.

He has served in numerous capacities during his time as an electrical contractor in the greater Tulsa Area. He has been honored by multiple organizations for his time and knowledge. Some include Associated Builders and Contractors, where John has served as an instructor, treasurer, president, and chairman for 50 years. He served on the training and trust fund for the State of Oklahoma and the Board of Directors for over 16 years. John served as Chairman of the Board and Past President of the Tulsa Executives Association. During his 50 years in the electrical business, John was voted twice as the ABC Outstanding Member of the Year. In 2000, John received and was awarded the Better Business Bureau Integrity Award for Market Place Ethics; he was a Beam Club Member Presidential Level with the Associated Builder and Contractors. In 2022, John was recognized by the ABC of Oklahoma for the Apprenticeship Pioneer Award for Leadership in establishing an apprenticeship training program.

John was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing, and golfing and was an adamant OU fan. John went on several elk hunting trips in Colorado and fishing trips in Colorado, Mexico, and the Amazon, as well as a dove trip to Argentina. He was a member of the Lunker bass club for many years, and tournament fished. John also enjoyed traveling to Canada for bear hunting and fishing. However, he loved being with family and having big gatherings at home. John and Lynda loved traveling. They have visited Aruba, Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica and took many trips to Colorado and Florida. In life, John was a giver to numerous organizations and communities. He has donated innumerable things on multiple projects, all for helping people and communities.

Survivors are his wife Lynda of the home, and two children Stephanie McCrary and her husband Scott of Southlake, Texas, Lori Bohl and her husband Chris of Bushyhead, Oklahoma, Angela Strong and her husband Richard of Colorado, Jeff Young and his wife Christy of Skiatook, Oklahoma, Kayla Gilmore and her fiancé Justin Davis of Bixby, Oklahoma; one brother Dan Houchin and his wife Naomi of Dripping Springs, Texas, two sisters Sylvia Hill of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dana Spivey and her husband Ronnie of Austin, Texas, mother in law Helen Glasgow of Cleveland, Oklahoma, father in law Leland Glasgow of Cleveland, Oklahoma, fifteen grandchildren Devin McCrary and Stefanie, Taylor McCrary, Brittany McAnelly, Sam McAnelly, Zach Strong and Ikumi, Madeline Johnson and Shane, Jeffrey Young, II and Autumn, Trenton Spess, Logan Jones, Mykenzie Jones, Paxton Gilmore, six great grandchildren Zen, Luca, Maverick, Harper, Addilyn, Holden and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by one grandson Dillon McCrary.

Services will be at the Tulsa Bible Church at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Oklahoma. In the Lieu of Flowers The family has requested memorial donations in honor of John to the Community Service Council designated to support the Oklahoma Veteran Alliance Suicide Prevention.
