The History of Clear Springs Mashak Cemetery

A quit claim deed dated October 7, 1894 was made by Joseph A. Sutherland, J. T. McCracken, O. D. Shirley and Sherman Roberson as "Trustees for the Public" for $1.00 for one acre of land. "Said land - piece or parcel of land to be used as a cemetery for the public." It was signed by Joseph A. Sutherland {his mark}. It was filed October 9, 1894 in Book 6, page 331, Oklahoma County.

Frank Mishak came to America from Bohemia. He settled south of Oklahoma City in an area that became known as the Mishak Community. He organized what may have been the original adult education classes. These classes were held two evenings a week after the work day was completed for the purpose of teaching English and other skills to immigrants. The community had two stores; one owned by Fred Genzer and the other, which housed the post office was owned by Frank Mishak. He also owned a barn and a cotton gin. There was a blacksmith shop and two dance halls.

The community was thriving with hopes of the railroad coming. The railroad did not come to this community so many of the settlers moved away. Frank Mishak and his family moved to Colorado in 1905. Some families did settle in the community permanently. Much of the community became part of the present day Tinker Air Force Base in 1956.

The cemetery was canvassed in 1960 with 107 names listed. The graves of many early settlers can be found here. Some of the markers are large flat sandstones from which the names have long been obliterated, while other stones have become covered with dirt.
