Richard Theodore Tomlin
Aug. 10, 1920 - Sept. 12, 2006
Entered into rest on September 12, 2006, at the age of 86. Born August > 10, 1920, in Boley, Oklahoma, he was the eldest of three sons born to Hurling and Ora [Brooks] Tomlin. After the death of his parents, the brothers moved to Bakersfield, California, to be raised by their grandparents, Richard and Elnora Tomlin.
Richard remained a life-time resident of Bakersfield until two years ago when he relocated to Sacramento, California, to be close to his sons and daughter, after the death of his wife, Mary Tomlin.
Richard attended local schools and graduated from high school in 1940.
He served in the United States Army from December 1942 to August 1943.
In 1976, Richard retired from the United States Post Office, where he was a mail carrier for 30 years.
After his retirement, his interests included his daily trips to purchase coffee and donuts at the nearby restaurant, daily walks and watching sports activities on television. He was an active member of the American Legion.
Richard leaves behind one brother, Ralph Tomlin; two sons, Kahlil Muhajdi (Dawn) and Reginald Tomlin (Kathy), one daughter, Trulee Tomlin; five grandchildren, Kimberly Copeland (Mark), Kevin (Aki) and Keishna Johnson, Nicholas Tomlin and Stanley Tomlin, Jr., and nine great grandchildren: Jade and Jasmine Copeland, Kyara, Anna, Desarae, Kahlista, Joshua and Tiava Johnson, and Donovan Cail, and a host of relatives, loved ones and friends.
His parents, Hurling and Ora Tomlin; brother, Hurling Tomlin, Jr., and son, Stanley Tomlin, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2006, at 9:00 a.m., and the viewing will be Friday, September 22, 2006, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Jesse E. Cooley, Jr. Funeral Home, 1100 Chester Avenue, Bakersfield, California 93301.
