Orson E. Rice
Submitted by: Justina A. Cook

Orson E. Rice was born at Ackley, Iowa, April 21, 1871. He came to this locality at the time of the opening of the Cherokee strip, living here until his untimely death at Guthrie, Okla., April 6, 1916.
His father died suddenly Dec. 7, 1907, his mother having passed away several years before.
In early life he became a member of the Baptist church and last November transferred his membership to the Methodist church, of which he was a very highly esteemed member at the time of his death.
In 1911 he was married to Miss Lela Monroe, who lives to mourn his loss. Besides the wife, a little son about four years old, and two sisters, Mrs. H. Cordell and Miss Nell Rice both living in California, remain.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist church by the pastor, Rev. W. C. Wheeler, assisted by Rev. M. B. Hurt, pastor of the First Baptist church.
Orson Rice was a quiet, genteel fellow, industrious to the limit and a man of whom not one harmful word could be said. His service for years with the local postoffice as mail carrier brought him into contact with all the men, women and children of Perry, and there was never but a kind word coming for him from his multitude of acquaintances.
May he rest in peace, and may the widow and fatherless babe be consoled by the supreme thought that when measured by the standard of men the husband and father must receive the reward merited by honor, integrity and earthly Christian citizenship.
